So today I'm going to share a post about why I think it's important to grow some or even a tiny bit of our own food. This may be a silly thing for some people or not very feasible for some in small apartments. However, something as simple as a tiny herb garden in a kitchen window or on a patio can make a big difference. So here's a couple reasons why
1. When you grow your own food, you know exactly what goes in it and how it was treated. You know if you treated your plant right, what soil you gave it, how much you cared for it whether it's organic.
2. You can save money by not having to go to the store all the time! You can save money on things like herbs or tomatoes which I constantly run out of!
3.You aren't supporting large corporations. This may seem kid of silly or not important, but most grocery stores pay their workers minimum wage, no benefits and the employees aren't always treated right. That company may not be environmentally friendly or care for it's customers. When you pick and eat from your own garden you know who it comes from, YOU!
4.You're helping the environment. By taking one less trip to the store that week or month. You are putting less into the trash, less packages in landfills and you are saving the gas from that trip to the store!
5.When you grow something yourself you are more likely to use it and it won't go to waste like so much does from our grocery stores and pantries.
6.Teaching children to grow food teaches them to value and appreciate it and the hard work that goes into it. That's a valuable lesson.
I personally have the following plants and most will be fruiting soon in the next few months, saving me SO much money!
-Strawberries
-Blueberries
-Blackberries
-Orange tree
-Apple tree
-Persimmon tree
-Fig tree
-Pomegranate tree
-Avacado tree
-basil
-oregano
-rosemary
-thyme
-lavendar
-aloe vera
-lemon verbena
-stevia
-zucchini
-summer squash
-chives
-tomato
-earl grey
All of these plants are saving me or will save me money of fruits and veggies I will eat all the time! So today I started some new seeds and wanted to share how easy it is to start a garden. I'll post progress and they grow too! Today I planted, tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, beets, eggplant, green beans and spinach! I should have ready to eat veggies in 2-4 months!
